Everyone Loves Wild Salmon, Don't They?

Campaign to save wild salmon launches into warp speed

June 30, 2010 by Megan Adams

MP Fin Donnelly and William Shatner have teamed up again to launch a postcard campaign in support of bill C-518, which would see all salmon aquaculture in closed containment within five years. First to sign on was Canadian film and television icon William Shatner who prepared a special video message for the campaign launch.

“Please join me in saving the salmon by signing the ‘Save the Salmon’ postcards and send(ing) it to your representative”, pleaded Shatner.

Shatner, joined by Alexandra Morton, ecologist Larry Dill and chief Bob Chamerblain, participated in a press release earlier this month for the New Democrat private member's bill.

Check out Donnelly's website to see a video from William Shatner, to sign a petition in support bill C-518 and to download the postcard. By downloading a postcard off Fin Donnelly's website, you can let your MP know that you support the bill.

“Not everyone can travel to Ottawa to raise this issue in the House of Commons, but you can send a postcard or sign on-line to show your support for wild salmon. We must do everything we can before it's too late”, said Donnelly.

According to Canadian biologist Dorothy Kieser, myxozoan parasite Henneguya salminicola is commonly found in the flesh of salmonids. It has been recorded in the field samples of salmon returning to the Queen Charlotte Islands. The fish responds by walling off the parasitic infection into a number of cysts that contain milky fluid. This fluid is an accumulation of a large number of parasites.
